En este tercer disco de la banda se recoge lo que dejó su predecesor Pure holocaust con suma rapidez y baja calidad en la producción. Las letras tratan sobre paisajes de invierno y frío. Como Pure Holocaust, también es considerado un álbum clásico en el black metal. Sin embargo, las baterías que grabó Abbath sobre el disco son a menudo criticadas, por su incapacidad para mantener los extremos tempos que este álbum requiere. Este es también el primer álbum en el que el concepto de Blashyrkh se convierte en un tema central. El concepto continúa a través de todos sus posteriores álbumes.
